Fraud: A total of 16,127 ghost workers have been identified and removed from the government's payroll. The verification exercise has saved 16.15b/- ($ 7.7 million) that would have been paid to the phantom workers as August 2016 salaries.

As the purge on phantom workers continues countrywide, the government has issued a two-day ultimatum to 136 public institutions to submit records of non-existent employees lest they are reported to the president for further action.

Accountability: Over 5000 trustees of civil societies, associations, religious bodies and other non-governmental organisations have been lined up for deregistration for failure to comply with the country's laws.  180 out of 200 non -profit institutions under the agency that were called for verification would be struck off register after failing to respond to the notice. Only 20 of them had responded to the notice. Another 320 non-profit institutions also are in the process for failing to meet required conditions.

Statistics: Tanzania is facing a deep institutional crisis with trust in Parliament slumping to worrying levels, a recent survey by an internationally respected body reveals. Tanzania is in the same group with Kenya where nearly 80 per cent of the respondents have expressed no trust in the legislature. The MPs' bribery scandals, the handling of the Constitutional Reforms debate and other controversies could have largely played a role in damaging public trust.
